  Figure 1. Flow chart showing "standard operating procedure" for inferences to design. Beginning at E, the event to be explained, we move to the first decision node, HP, which asks if E is highly probable. If yes, we explain E by necessity. If no, we move to the next node, IP, which asks if E is an intermediate probability event. If yes, we explain E by chance. If no, we move to the last decision mode, SP/sp, which asks if E is a specified (sp) event of small proabability (SP). If yes, we explain E by design. If specification is lacking, we refer the event to chance.
