Special Edition: Faith and Science
-
Rich McGee, 12 year staff member of Christian Leadership Ministries, guest
edits this second issue of the Real Issue that is devoted to faith and
science. In this introductory article, he explains his purpose is twofold: 1)
to provide valuable information from leading thinkers whom God is using and 2)
to inspire Christian professors to combine this with their own research to
develop scientific apologetics presentations.

Stephen Hawking, The Big Bang, and God (Part 1)
-
Dr. "Fritz" Schaeffer, the Graham Perdue Professor of Chemistry and the
director of the Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry at the University of
Georgia, makes comments on Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time. Although
Dr. Schaeffer notes some areas in which he disagrees with Hawking, he
concludes, ". . . the reason for Hawking's success as a popularizer of science,
is that he addresses the problems of meaning and purpose that concern all
thinking people."
-
The Professor's Obligation
-
Dr. Rae Mellichamp, Emeritus Professor of Management Science in the Graduate
School of Business at the University of Alabama, chose to leave his life of 25
years as a successful university professor and join the fulltime staff of
Christian Leadership Ministries. What would compel such a successful educator
to leave his life as a university professor? Mellichamp says the answer to that
lies behind his life as a Christian professor.
-
Is God Unconstitutional? (Part 2)
-
Dr. Phillip E. Johnson, professor of law at the University of California,
Berkeley and author of the book Darwin on Trial, brings his acute legal
mind to the many issues surrounding Darwinism. He concludes his exposition of
the deeply philosophical bias for faith in evolution held by the theory's
advocates.
-
Ruse "Gives Away the Store"
-
Dr. Michael Ruse, professor of zoology and philosophy of science at the
University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, stunned his listeners at the 1993
annual AAAS meeting in Boston by announcing that he had recently come to view
evolution as ultimately based on several unproven philosophical assumptions.
Tom Woodward, president of the C. S. Lewis Fellowship, documents this historic
meeting.
-
Is Science a Threat or Help to Faith?
-
Dr. J. P. Moreland, Professor of Philosophy at Talbot School of Theology,
responds to the question "How are we to understand the relationship between
science and Christianity?" He concludes, "There is nothing wrong in principle,
however, with bringing one's theology into the practice of science. . . . it
is time for Christians to rethink these matters and allow theistic science to
be a part of how they love God with their minds."
-
An Academic Trip with Eternal Benefits
-
Dr. Phil Bishop, Professor of Physiology at the University of Alabama, shares
how "just another academic trip" turned into a short-term missionary
opportunity in Ecuador. He concludes, "Every trip we as Christian faculty make
has the potential of reaping eternal benefits."
